AI Isn't Coming for Your Job. It's Coming for Your Salary.

The pitch is everywhere. AI won't replace you — it will augment you. It's a copilot, an assistant, a tireless intern. A tool to make you faster, sharper, more productive. Who could object to that? More output for the same hours sounds like a gift.

But the gift has a price tag. And the price tag isn't on the box.

The Productivity Trap

Imagine two coworkers. One adopts the AI tool early and ships twice as much. Their manager notices. Promotions follow. The other coworker, who preferred to think through problems unassisted, now looks slow by comparison — not because their work is worse, but because the benchmark just moved.

This is how the choice disappears. The early adopters don't need to evangelize. They just need to exist. Once a fraction of any team uses AI to keep pace with deadlines, the rest are forced to follow or fall behind. Pushing back becomes a career-limiting move dressed up as principle. The tool stops being optional the moment your peers stop treating it as optional.

We've seen this pattern before with email, with Slack, with the smartphone tethered to your hip on weekends. Each one arrived as a convenience and settled into an obligation. AI is following the same path, just faster.

The Atrophy Problem

There's a deeper cost. Every time you reach for the tool instead of the skill, the skill gets a little weaker. A writer who drafts with AI for two years writes differently — and often less capably — than one who didn't. A developer who autocompletes their way through a codebase builds a shallower mental model of it. A junior analyst who never had to struggle through a messy dataset never learns what struggling through a messy dataset teaches you.

The tool becomes the default. Then it becomes the norm. Then it becomes the only way you know how to do the task at all.

This is fine when the tool is a hammer. You buy a hammer once. You own it. It sits in your garage and waits. If the hardware store closes, you still have a hammer.

AI is not a hammer.

The Subscription You Can't Audit

AI is a metered utility. You don't own it; you rent access to it, and the meter runs every time you use it. Every prompt costs tokens. Every response costs tokens. And increasingly, every thought the model has between your prompt and its response costs tokens too.

Here's what's published: the price per million input tokens and per million output tokens. Here's what isn't: the cost of the "thinking" or "reasoning" tokens the model burns internally before producing an answer. You see the final reply. You're billed for everything that happened backstage.

Nothing prevents a provider from tuning their system to think a little longer than strictly necessary. A few extra tokens per query. Imperceptible to you. Billions of queries per day across the user base. The math is obvious. You can't audit it because you can't see it, and you can't see it because the architecture doesn't show you. You are trusting the meter reader to read the meter honestly, and the meter is inside their house.

Surge Pricing Is Coming

Now consider where this leads. Ride-sharing apps figured out that demand isn't uniform — and that customers will pay more when they have to. Cloud providers price compute by the second and adjust by region and load. Electricity grids have time-of-use rates.

AI inference is compute. Compute is constrained. Demand peaks during business hours, in business time zones, on business days. Why wouldn't the same tokens cost more between 9 AM and 5 PM on a Tuesday than at 3 AM on a Sunday?

When the tool you now need to do your job costs more during the hours you're doing your job, you're no longer just buying productivity. You're paying a tax on showing up to work. And because your employer expects the output that only the tool can produce at that pace, you can't simply opt out and work slower. The deadline doesn't move. The expectation doesn't move. Only your effective wage moves — downward.

The Real Trade

So let's restate the bargain honestly. You are being offered a productivity boost in exchange for:

  • A skillset that quietly erodes the longer you depend on the tool
  • A workplace norm that makes the tool non-optional regardless of your preference
  • A metered cost structure where the meter is opaque and the rates may flex against you
  • A growing share of your professional output rented from a third party you cannot meaningfully negotiate with

The job stays. The title stays. The desk stays. What changes is how much of the value you produce flows through to you, and how much is skimmed on the way by the infrastructure you now depend on to produce it at all.

AI isn't coming for your job. Your job will still be there, waiting for you to log in and pay the toll.
